The media industry is undoubtedly one of the industries that has undergone the greatest digital changes. Seen over a broad spectrum, the industry has skilfully carried out a digital redevelopment of both business models, production methods and distribution methods.

The digital business development has had good conditions, and the industry is in many ways a digitization role model for other industries, which are a little more sluggish. Studies also show that the media industry is one of the most digitization-ready industries at all.

We are all consumers of media content, and behind our devices we clearly feel that with digitization we have gained new personalized offers and new forms of distribution. It provides better experiences for all of us, and it provides fantastic opportunities for the industry to continue to develop new solutions and better offers.

But as in all other industries, we in the media industry must of course also digitize with care. We must have an eye for ethical dilemmas, the protection of Danish quality content and for fair competition in the digital world as well.

Director of DI Digital, Rikke Hougaard Zeberg, welcomes you to this year's Copenhagen Future TV Conference.

Claus Bülow Christensen

To set the stage for the day, Claus Bülow Christensen gives an introductory overview of the TV and streaming industry's newest challenges since the last FutureTV conference, with the continued development of American streaming on the global market and in the local Danish market.

An insight into the most important trends in the international TV and streaming market and a status of the US streaming services' market development and global growth plans in particular.

How are things going for Amazon Prime, AppleTV+, Disney+, HBO Max, Netflix and others, and how do they fare against each other in a stagnant domestic market, but a growing international market?

We look at the latest mergers coming up and what it means for the global streaming market.

We also get an update on the continued expansion of tech giants Google, Apple and Amazon's continued conquest of the TV and streaming distribution market, as well as their continued heavy investment in content production.

All these American streaming giants and tech giants are no longer just knocking on the door of Danish households – they are already well positioned in the living rooms and behind the screens. And while Danish TV consumers love them, they also create major challenges in the Danish market for TV distribution and TV production – but also many new opportunities.

And what is Danishness? And are Danish TV series from American streaming services just calculated by smart algorithms?

Claus Bülow Christensen

Founder and CEO, TomorrowsNextMedia Consultancy

Claus Bülow Christensen is the organizer of the Copenhagen Future TV Conference 2020 and will be today's moderator.

Has worked with media and technology since 1985, i.a. in leading positions at TV 2, the Metronome group, Tele Danmark, Framfab, Dansk Bredbånd, GlobalConnect and others.

In 2002, was behind Denmark's first Internet-based TV distribution and Video On Demand product at the electricity company NVE's newly started fiber network department, a concept that later became the company Waoo, and the start of the Danish electricity companies' expansion of fiber networks.

Has worked since 2005 as an advisor and consultant for the film and television industry, and the telecommunications industry, with e.g. business strategy, seminars and workshops.

As a long-standing analyst of the digital development in the media market, is a frequently cited expert in Danish media, radio and television.

Lecturer and blog writer on the digital media development at Echo film - and founder and organizer of the Copenhagen Future TV Conference, which has been an annual gathering point for the industry since 2008.

The positions of strength in the streaming and TV market

Who is perceived as the strongest?

Daniel Ebert Pedersen

Wilke is again presenting this year a completely fresh user survey that maps the Danish TV and streaming market here and now. Wilke has followed Danes' TV/streaming behavior since 2016, which gives a unique insight into the development of user groups and streaming behaviour.

We get fresh figures on how the established services Netflix, TV2 Play and Viaplay are doing, and we give an insight into how newer services such as HBO Max and Disney+ have conquered the market.

We also look at the development in distribution channels, where streaming services such as value added services are growing.

This time we also delve into how the positions of strength between streaming services and TV package providers are. Who is seen as the strongest to deliver sports, reality, crime, news etc.? Who delivers the best value for money? And are there any gaps in the market that neither service manages to fill today?

Daniel Ebert Pedersen from Wilke will give us a fresh and exciting insight into this and much more.

NIELSEN about the new viewership measurement in Denmark

Get an insight into Denmark's new TV and streaming measurement from Nielsen

Chantale Coulombe, Market Leader, NIELSEN Media Denmark

Since 1 January, we in Denmark have had a new system for TV and streaming measurement, supplied by the international analysis company Nielsen, which has been carrying out TV measurements all over the world since the 1950s.

The new TV and streaming measurement has been tailored for Denmark by Nielsen in close collaboration with DR, TV 2, Nordic Entertainment Group and Discovery Networks.

The solution is the most comprehensive and detailed measurement of Danes' use of TV and streaming platforms to date, as daily reports are made on a panel consisting of 1.750 households (30 percent more than in the previous Danish TV measurements) corresponding to approximately 3.500 people.

Through one unified single-source panel, Nielsen ensures a solid and fully representative measurement of Danish households using passive data collection.

Participating households have had the latest technology installed in measuring equipment, which enables Nielsen to measure all people in the household and their consumption of traditional TV as well as streaming across all screens in the household.

In this post, Market leader Chantale Coulombe from Nielsen in Denmark will give us a closer look at the measurement system and the technique behind it, as well as the latest figures and observations from the measurements.

Understanding the success factors in European streaming services

This presentation gives an overview of a recent comprehensive in-depth project analyzing European streaming services.

The project builds a clear picture of the landscape and the factors at play. We can characterize or even caricature some of the different strategies and approaches to give the participants a sense of how this market will continue to evolve, who will be the losers and who will be the winners.

The insights behind this project are being formed through real-time, live access to virtually all streaming products across Europe (and the rest of the world) and constant tracking of TV advertising and promos across Europe and globally.

The experts behind the project are a group of media consultants working out of Germany, Spain, Denmark and the UK.

Proposal: What is the content offer and how are some of the leading streaming services positioned? How do the services differ to other products in the market and products in other markets worldwide? To what extent is the service driven by acquired content or original productions?

Personalization & Recommendation: To what extent are services being personalized and to what extent are user profiles being used to further personalize the experience.

Compliance: To what extent is the shape and approach of services defined by local and European laws and regulations? How does that impact the product experience?

Competitive landscape: How do the streaming services in the market (SVOD, AVOD, BVOD) compare with legacy cable, satellite & IPTV providers and how do global rollout strategies, broadband penetration and device ownership impact on the strategies in play.

The next development phase of the Nordic TV and streaming market

Marie Nilsson, Mediavision

Mediavision has closely tracked the Nordic TV and streaming market since 1996, and continues to follow the market's providers, consumers and key figures in detail.

Based on Mediavision's many years of data-driven analysis of the media and telecommunication industries in the Nordics, the company's founder and CEO, Marie Nilsson, will in this presentation look into some possible paths ahead.

The Nordic online video market is showing clear signs of maturity. We have had a period of very strong growth, in which the global players have had a crucial role. But also the Nordic TV companies have transformed to online, which has affected the overall business, as well as content. With clear indications that we are now approaching saturation in the streaming market, what could the next phase look like?

In the presentation, Marie will look at how the TV market could evolve over the coming 5 years, including areas such as FAST (Free ad-supported streaming TV services) and AVOD (Advertising-Based Video on Demand) but also the Nordic region's large and strong public service sector. How will these services interact with the well-established SVOD services? Will consumers opt for ad-based/free services or stick to paying?

Introduction to PlutoTV in Denmark

The advertising-funded streaming service comes to Denmark in May

Get an insight into PlutoTV, the first major free streaming service to be launched on the Danish market in May, which is owned by Paramount (formerly known as ViacomCBC).

Will advertising-financed TV series and films catch on with Danish consumers? We get a thorough review of the upcoming PlutoTV service, which is being launched on the Danish streaming market in a collaboration between ViacomCBC and NENTGroup, which is shutting down Viafree whose content will become part of PlutoTV.

PlutoTV is present in 26 countries and at the end of 2021 had 64 million active monthly users. By 2022, the service is expected to have revenue of over $1 billion from advertising.

Hear about the future visions with PlutoTV and what content Danish consumers will encounter at the launch in May.

Blockchain and Non-Fungible Tokens (NFT) in the TV and Film Industry?

Since 2009, Bitcoin and blockchain have inspired countless crypto-currencies and technologies such as; Ether, Tether, Solana, Cardano, Poly, Dai, BAYC, ect.

A common goal is the efficient securing and trading of digital value and digital objects.

The so-called Non-fungible tokens (NFT) have also grown out of the technology, where the unique ownership of digital art or music, images or video can be anchored in a blockchain. It provides completely new financing opportunities for the production of films and TV series.

We also see Decentral Autonomous Organizations (DAO), which is the idea of a digital "company" - where you can buy in, contribute, have a say and reap value from the "company's" production.

The technologies are currently experiencing such great and often uncritical interest that it looks like hype, and dizzying sums are already being invested in e.g. digital artworks. But is it pure hype, a bubble, or the beginning of a new future for digital value proposition?

No matter what it ends up being for NFT, it is worth keeping an eye on these months and Nikolaj Sonne gives us an easy-to-understand introduction to the technology behind blockchain and the concept behind NFT.

Niels Jul

Executive Producer and founder of NFT Studios

After starting his career in Copenhagen advertising agencies, with clients such as Sony, Ericsson, Mobil Oil and L'Oreal, Niels Juul went on to build or manage the international growth of brands such as Cerruti, Porche Design and George Jensen from bases in London, Paris , Sydney, Tokyo and Los Angeles.

In 2008, Juul was appointed CEO of the struggling Italian-American multi-Oscar winning film company Cecchi Gori Pictures, bringing the company to profitability for the first time in 20 years and generating financing for his first major film, "Silence" by Martin Scorsese , for over 10 years.

Niels Juul is currently based in Los Angeles and has, among other things, was executive producer on the Martin Scorsese film "The Irishman" starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci. He is also an executive producer on Martin Scorsese's upcoming film, “Killers of the Flower Moon” starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro.

Niels Juul is also the producer of "Enzo Ferrari", to be directed by Michael Mann. He recently signed a production agreement with Nordisk Film and acts as Executive Producer on a number of film and TV projects in development.

From TV station to streaming service

Stig Møller Christensen, TV 2

As TV and streaming technology has developed and matured over the years, the market has adapted to the new opportunities and broadcasters across the globe have embraced the technology.

For many years, TV was something that was only sent out via masts and coax cables to households with antennas or cable TV plugs in the wall, but today the Internet is taking over the role of the old broadcasting technologies.

TV 2 was born in 1988 on a newly built broadcast network in Denmark as the first advertising-based nationwide TV station on Danish soil, and over the years has gained great popularity and become a cornerstone of Danes' everyday media life. TV 2 even previously owned the antenna broadcasting network together with DR.

In December 2004, TV 2 was quite early on with an Internet-based service in the form of TV 2 Sputnik, while Netflix at this time was a DVD rental service by mail order. Sputnik reached approx. 50.000 customers before the service was discontinued and became TV 2 Play on 21 May 2012.

In October of the same year, Netflix came to Denmark as the first major American streaming service and surprised most with its rapid popularity, and suddenly the word became streaming allemand's property in Denmark and the Nordics.

Since then, TV 2 has gone through a transformation process to today be anchored with TV 2 Play as a solid Danish streaming service that has maintained Danes' interest in TV 2 in the new streaming age. Most recently, TV 2 announced that it had reached 900.000 subscribers to TV 2 Play.

But this is only the beginning – TV 2 is in the process of further developing TV 2 Play to seriously position itself as a serious Danish alternative to the American streaming services, i.a. by maintaining a large and vibrant range of linear TV via TV 2 Play.

In this post, Stig Møller Christensen, Commercial & Digital Director at TV 2, and a consistent key figure in the development of the commercial side of TV 2 Play, will give us an insight into TV 2 Play as a focal point for TV 2's strategy and future public service business - both in relation to positioning, business, impact, content investments, partnerships and user interface.

Stig Møller Christensen is combined CCO/CDO at TV 2 Denmark with overall strategic and operational responsibility for TV 2's overall business and digital product portfolio.

He has previously for many years been director of TV2's pay-TV area, incl. the commercial management of TV 2 PLAY, and has been instrumental in driving the service's significant growth.

Stig's experience within the TV industry spans both the old value chain and streaming, and he was a central figure when TV 2's main channel was converted to a pay channel in 2012.

Before his employment at TV 2, Stig was a strategy consultant at QVARTZ and executive assistant at Berlingske.

Danish media policy in a global media world?

A debate about Danish media policy in a new age for the TV industry - with new effective opportunities for global distribution and with challenges and opportunities with global players in our home market.

We invite media spokespersons and industry players to discuss the future of Danish film and TV in the light of a new Danish media agreement, which will be drawn up in a year, during which new international streaming services will be added while the already established ones continue to grow and spread in Danish households – and in the Danish production environment.

How do politicians and industry professionals see the future's ideal interaction between the classical public service institutions, the production environment, the creative forces and the large American streaming services?

The discussion will take its starting point from the conference day's topics and the learnings and facts that today's speakers have presented about consumer behavior and market development.
