Negotiating creativity in a global streaming world

Lone Amtrup · Phillippe Kress

The session provides a unique insight into the rights dealer's perspective and how negotiations with global streaming services like Netflix actually take place in practice. Based on experiences from working with photographers, editors and production designers – and as an agent for authors and their film adaptation rights – a rarely illuminated part of the value chain behind Danish films and TV series is opened up.

The presentation focuses on what characterizes a well-functioning and sustainable cooperation agreement between creative professional groups, rights holders and an international streaming service. How is the collaboration experienced by the retailer, what requirements and expectations are set, and how have the dialogue and contractual practices been adjusted in line with the industry's experiences – not least after the challenges and conflicts that characterized the early years with global streaming players on the Danish market?

At the same time, the focus is on the perspectives of the creative forces behind Danish films and TV series, when the right agreements are in place. What does it mean for working conditions, rights structure and long-term career opportunities when the collaboration works? And how is consideration for local creative ambitions balanced with the business logic and standardized agreement models of global platforms?

Finally, the session discusses the importance of global exposureHow big a role does the international visibility that streaming services can offer play compared to creating content primarily for the domestic market? And how can Danish creative actors best exploit the global reach without losing control over rights, earnings and artistic ownership?

Also on stage will be the internationally renowned Danish cinematographer Phillippe Kress, who will talk about his experiences working for the major American streaming services.
