The battle for television

An initial overview of the TV industry's newest challenges - in the shadow of the corona crisis, and now with even more American streaming services from the media giants, as well as new aggressive TV and streaming strategies from the tech giants.

On the horizon lurk large groups such as Apple, Google and Amazon, each working hard to become the TV and streaming distributors of the future. Both with own TV boxes and apps, and by wedged in with other players, and by slowly but surely building up its own large content catalogs.

At the same time, the new flat screens that Danes are buying in large numbers are equipped with apps and functions that make them TV and streaming one-stop shops in themselves, and put pressure on local media distributors.

So how far have the tech giants come with their distribution strategy and what products are they coming up with? And who will be the preferred TV and streaming providers in the near future?

At the same time, we see that Apple produces more and more TV series and films, Google offers TV packages in the US, Amazon wants to buy MGM, the purest Hollywood gold, all the while Netflix enters into a big deal with Steven Spielberg.

Over a year of the corona crisis, we have seen a tremendous boost in streaming development, and streaming wars had just started when we were locked in our living rooms.

We get a summary of the most significant impacts the unheard of crisis has had on media development by looking at a number of impact points for the most important trends, and at the same time sets the stage for the conference's themes and today's various presentations.

Claus Bülow Christensen

Founder and CEO, TomorrowsNextMedia Consultancy

Claus Bülow Christensen is the organizer of the Copenhagen Future TV Conference 2020 and will be today's moderator.

Has worked with media and technology since 1985, i.a. in leading positions at TV 2, the Metronome group, Tele Danmark, Framfab, Dansk Bredbånd, GlobalConnect and others.

In 2002, was behind Denmark's first Internet-based TV distribution and Video On Demand product at the electricity company NVE's newly started fiber network department, a concept that later became the company Waoo, and the start of the Danish electricity companies' expansion of fiber networks.

Has worked since 2005 as an advisor and consultant for the film and television industry, and the telecommunications industry, with e.g. business strategy, seminars and workshops.

As a long-standing analyst of the digital development in the media market, is a frequently cited expert in Danish media, radio and television.

Lecturer and blog writer on the digital media development at Echo film - and founder and organizer of the Copenhagen Future TV Conference, which has been an annual gathering point for the industry since 2008.

New flat screens with high dynamic range (HDR) and 4K provide better and more detailed images than cinemas can perform - but can we tell the difference?

About cinemas and streaming

Christian Monggaard

Feature films have always been popular on TV, and Danish TV stations have had a years-long tradition of co-financing Danish feature films in exchange for the right to show the films.

Our television sets can gradually display images in as good, or even better, quality as in the cinema, and new flat screens are now supplied with a Filmmaker mode button that makes it possible to reproduce image and sound with the creative intentions of the filmmakers.

So the flat screen at home in the living room visually approaches the cinema experience, and with their own streaming services the major American film companies have gained a new and efficient global distribution device.

Will it be media giants like Warner and Disney and their streaming services that in the future will ultimately decide which blockbusters will be shown in theaters or on streaming or both?

Over the past year, Warner and Disney in particular have gained massive experience in releasing their films on both streaming and in cinemas, and have tested various commercial models for delivering their films, both as part of the subscription to their streaming services and for additional payment.

We have seen Danish cinemas boycott a number of blockbusters from both Warner and Disney in protest over new conditions for renting their films, and the fact that some of the films can be seen on the day of the premiere at home in our homes.

Is this just a corona crisis phenomenon, or are there major permanent changes in the film industry on the way? On the one hand, we hear about lawsuits against Disney (Scarlett Johansson feels cheated of cinema revenue), and on the other hand, we hear that the Warner group will continue into 2022 with at least 10 major films released in cinemas at the same time as premieres on HBO Max ( which will come to the Nordics later in the year). So what will it end up with?

So how important are feature films really to the TV and streaming industry?
And how much does the real cinema experience mean to us?

Claus Bülow Christensen presents the latest figures and facts about films and streaming, and together with the film expert and cinema lover Christian Monggaard, gives an idea of likely scenarios for the future.

Co-author of three quiz books. Has contributed to Morten Piil's director's encyclopedia and written books about Wikke & Rasmussen, Erik Balling, Ib Tardini and Danes in Hollywood. Published in 2018 critically acclaimed coffee table book about the Olsen Gang.

Has most recently published the successful book about Matador (with Jacob Wendt Jensen) and from his own publisher published his book about the American cartoonist Robert Crumb.

A fearless expedition into the media universe

Evan Shapiro

Evan Shapiro has worked with the ultimate mapping of the media universe, and has established himself as the leading cartographer within the TV and streaming industry.

In this presentation we get a completely fresh review of the latest CTVerse Map, looking deeply into the most important players in the media universe, and try to predict the immediate development.

A new trend this year is an almost manic activity within acquisitions, where the big tech and media companies are swallowing up the smaller ones.

Evan makes a qualified bid for the next acquisitions and mergers, which we will see in the industry, and looks at how it will affect market development, and he introduces his Merger Mania quiz for us all to take part in.

Right now we see that WarnerMedia will merge with Discovery Networks, and Amazon is going for Hollywood gold by acquiring MGM. What will be the next surprise acquisition, and the next big merger?

And we look at what impact these mega-mergers will have on smaller markets like the Nordics and Danish.

Evan Shapiro has worked in media, entertainment and education, creating distinctive content, building iconic brands, teaching thousands of students and young executives, leading a charge for diversity and inclusion in media, and pushing for change in the industry as an executive, producer, board member, professor, writer and thought leader.

As Board Chair of The Ghetto Film School and Co-Founder of One Day Immersion, and as a writer, speaker and thought leader, for decades Shapiro has spent substantial time, energy and personal capital on pushing the entertainment community to increase opportunity, access and inclusion for those who have been historically under-represented on and behind the camera. As a producer and executive, his efforts have resulted in ground-breaking projects in film, television and podcasting, giving platforms to new, original and diverse voices.

Shapiro's work has resulted in awards, critical acclaim, and, most importantly, a strong and diverse community of collaborators, across the spectrum of disciplines in the for-profit and non-profit spheres.

“Beyond Television”

The "third golden age" of television series was ushered in by HBO's introduction of original programming in the late 1990s and cable classics such as The Sopranos, The Wire og Six Feet Under.

The first shot in the arm in HBO's new series strategy came in 1997 with the premiere of the prison series Oz, and in the same year Netflix emerged as an online DVD rental company.

Since then, the television landscape has changed radically - Netflix started streaming in 2007 and in recent years the large American media groups have followed suit and the demand for happy has increased significantly.

But how does the production industry keep up with the continued strong growing demand for attractive, new, original, surprising and engaging content?

In this post, we get an insight into the American television industry's hectic development in recent years - from the rise of cable channels to the modern streaming era - and we zoom in on the various industrial strategies and the issue of quality in a time of both increased global competition and a massive quantitative demand.

The post is based on Andreas Halskov's book, Beyond Television (published February 2021), linking television history and analysis as well as interviews with a number of the most central television creators and industry professionals in the United States.

Editor of the film and TV magazine 16:9, teacher and specialist book author

Andreas Halskov (b. 1981) has an MA in Film Studies and English and has worked as an external lecturer for several years, in addition to having worked as a freelance writer for e.g. Politiken, EKKO and Soundvenue and film and TV expert in various media and programs (e.g. Filmland, Go'morgen Danmark and Kulturen på News).

Now he works as a teacher, lecturer and curator for the Cinemateket and Øst for Paradis, in addition to being an advisor at the TV festival This Series and editor of the film and TV magazine 16:9.

He has written countless articles and book chapters about film and television for various media and edited a number of film and television specialist anthologies.

In addition, he is the author of the books The Art of Paradox – about David Lynch and his films (2014), TV Peaks: Twin Peaks and Modern Television Drama (2015), Death over Hollywood – existential traces in the New Hollywood film (2016), Remakes, sequels and Serialization (2019) and Beyond Television: TV Production in the Multiplatform Era (2021).

The Danish TV and film production industry is experiencing a lot of activity, with increasing demand for Danish productions, and particularly from American streaming services such as Netflix. HBO and Disney have also announced that in the future they will produce content on Danish/Nordic grounds.

At the same time, the local TV stations and streaming services also demand Danish content, and Danish production companies report legitimately hectic conditions.

So how is the atmosphere in the Danish industry right now, when we have several major TV series in production in Denmark for e.g. Netflix where DR plans Guarantee 4 in collaboration with Netflix and Ole Bornedal's upcoming blockbuster, The shadow in my eye, is produced with Netflix as a co-investor.

How does the development affect Danish film and TV production? Can you follow, is there enough talent for all the productions, do more film workers need to be trained, and are there special requirements that the Danish industry must place on the foreign actors?

Christina Rosendahl

Chairman of Danish Film Directors

Christina Rosendahl is a film director and front woman for Danish Film Directors.

Born 1971. Studied literature and film and media studies at the University of Copenhagen and attended the European Film Academy and the New York Film Academy before completing her education at the alternative film school Super16 in 2002.

Breakthrough with "Stjernekigger", a documentary film about the band Swan Lee. The feature film debut "Supervoksen" (2006), secured her a Robert for best children's and family film in 2007. Her second feature film "Idealisten" (2015), a political thriller, brought Rosendahl the award for best director at the Beijing Film Festival in 2016, among other things.

Rosendahl has also been behind several documentaries, including "The Power of Love" (2004) and "Violence in the Name of Love" (2017).

The latest film from Christina Rosendahl is the drama "Vores mand i Amerika" with Ulrich Thomsen in the lead role.

Rosendahl became chairman of Danish Film Directors in 2014.

American streaming services have become very widespread and popular among the Danes, who spend a lot of time on their content. During the conference day, we learned about the latest figures for the development.

Purely market-wise, streaming services such as Netflix, Disney+ and HBO Nordic generate billions of revenue in Denmark, more than the Danish streaming services combined.

So is there a need for regulation? Concretely, the old media settlement has a passage about a not further defined tax on streaming services of 2%, and actors in the industry have a desire for a future new media settlement of 7%.

It is, among other things, with the background that a number of European countries have already introduced both taxes, charges and investment obligations for the very large services, which e.g. affects Netflix noticeably, and soon also the Disney and Warner group's streaming services around Europe.

So how do you get some money out of the pockets of the streaming services in Denmark, and where does that money go? And is it a streaming tax or, to a greater extent, a desire for a cultural contribution to Denmark?

In this panel debate, we hear for and against such taxes/fees/contributions from two sides of the industry, namely production and distribution, and thus provide input to the media policy rapporteurs.

More than 20 years of experience as manager, CEO and board member within media, television, film and culture. Has been a director in both very large and complex organizations such as DR and in smaller private companies such as Nimbus Film. Extensive experience in managing creative organisations, people and processes.

Many years of work at the crossroads between private companies and public institutions and extensive experience with target management and political decision-making processes.
