The global streaming services and their constant changes

Get an analytical overview of the most significant changes in the global streaming services – market position, mergers, acquisitions and competitive conditions. The post also presents proposals for scenarios for their strategies in the coming years.

We see e.g. on the growing tendency for the large American media groups to collect all the content they have through various acquisitions and mergers in one app, aimed at the global market.

Currently, we will soon see HBO Max and Discovery+ content gathered in one app, and content from NBC Universal, Viacom, Paramount, Sky is now gathered in the recently extended service SkyShowtime.

What does this form of bundling and total offer mean for the Danish market? And what is the big giants' expected strategy in local markets such as the Nordics?

And what will the new affordable advertising-supported editions of the major global streaming services mean for the money flows in the Danish television industry?

The analysis will cover i.a. Disney+, PrimeVideo, Netlix, HBO Max and WarnerDiscovery, AppleTV+ and SkyShowtime.

In the post, we also get a status of the ambitions of Google (Alphabet), Apple and Amazon to become the preferred TV and streaming distributors, with apps and hardware that bring together their entire food chain in one service.

Claus Bülow Christensen is the founder and organizer of the Copenhagen Future TV Conference and will be today's moderator.

Has worked with media and technology since 1985, i.a. in leading positions at TV 2, the Metronome group, Tele Danmark, Framfab, Dansk Bredbånd, GlobalConnect and others.

Has worked since 2005 as an advisor and consultant for the film and television industry, and the telecommunications industry, with e.g. business strategy, seminars and workshops.

As a long-standing analyst of the digital development in the media market, is a frequently cited expert in Danish media, radio and television.

Lecturer and blog writer on the digital media development at Echo film - and founder and organizer of the Copenhagen Future TV Conference, which has been an annual gathering point for the industry since 2008.

What characterizes the Danish consumer's loyalty to the streaming services, and how much do they switch between the services?

What content are we looking for and how much money do Danes spend on streaming? And how does inflation and the energy crisis affect the desire to buy TV packages and streaming subscriptions?

And what do the Danes say about being able to save money on their streaming when cheaper and advertising-financed versions come on the market?

The FutureTV conference is not called FutureTV for nothing - and this post is thus a follow-up to a FutureTV post at our conference in June 2016, where we raised the question:

And what if the subscription-based streaming services such as At some point Netflix introduces advertising, what will it be worth to advertisers - and what could it mean for the commercial TV stations?

Peter & Claes return and give their 2022 answers!

The streaming service TV 2 Play has already been running for a long time with two versions – with and without advertising. And since May, Danes have had access to the completely free streaming service, PlutoTV.

Here at the beginning of November, Netflix is launching an affordable advertising-financed version in 12 countries for the time being, and we can expect that we will also get such a "Basic with ads" Netflix in Denmark - and that both HBO Max, Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video will follow suit.

All indications are that these ad-financed version of the streaming services will be a success, and will create significant changes in the money flows in the TV and streaming market. Eg. Netflix itself expects that up to 40% of their customers will choose the new version.

It will initiate a trend where advertising money moves more and more from traditional TV to streaming services. What does this mean for the market and the various actors?

Claes is responsible for securing the best marketing effects at the best prices, on behalf of some of the biggest advertisers in the industry. He thus has his finger on the pulse when it comes to where the advertising dollars will be allocated in 2020.

The year has been characterized by heavy discussions about rights conflicts, halts in development and cultural contributions.

But we also got enough of a global streaming service for Denmark with SkyShowtime, and Disney has recently announced that, like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, they will launch Nordic fiction series.

The rights conflict has had an important breakthrough with the recently concluded agreement between Netflix and Create Denmark, which negotiates rights on behalf of a number of the Danish creative unions.

How can Denmark once again start a prolific production of fiction and build a healthy relationship with all the global streaming services that have shown a great desire to invest, both in Denmark in the past and are currently creating growth with their activities all over Europe?

In this session, we get an idea of this and interesting insights from two significant players who represent the production industry and the central creative professions respectively, namely producer Meta Louise Foldager, director of SAM Productions, and chairman of the Danish Actors' Association and spokesperson for Create Denmark, Benjamin Boe Rasmussen.

And we have an open and constructive debate about how we can best achieve a fruitful collaboration in the future - both locally and locally, and on the new large international market with the global streaming services.

Meta Louise Foldager Sørensen is a film producer and CEO of Meta Film, which she founded in 2010 and CEO of SAM Productions, which she founded in 2014 together with Adam Price and Søren Sveistrup.

She has a long career behind her, where she has been at the helm of some of Danish film's biggest film and TV productions, and has thus worked with directors such as Lars von Trier, Nikolaj Arcel, Mikkel Munch-Fals, Kasper Barfoed, Fenar Ahmad, Ali Abassi and Per Fly.

Mete Louise Foldager has been the producer international successes such as the TV series The Chestnut Man, the ways of the Lord, Borgen - The kingdom, the power and the honor og Ragnarok and DR success the orchestra, and movies like A Royal Affair, Antichrist, Melancholia, Summer '92 Others

Benjamin Boe Rasmussen

Chairman of the Danish Actors' Association and spokesman for Create Denmark

Benjamin Boe Rasmussen graduated from the acting school at Odense Theater in 1996. He i.a. played Quasimodo in Klokkeren in "Klokkeren fra Notre Dame" (2004) at Folketeatret and Arnold in Det Danske Teater's production of the Kim Larsen film "Midt om natten" (2006). He has otherwise played on virtually every stage in Copenhagen and also on the big stages in Ålborg, Odense and Århus.

Benjamin Boe Rasmussen has appeared in many films, including "The Judge" (2005) and Per Fly's "The Bench" (2000). In addition, he has, among other things, also starred in the TV series "Nynne" (2006), "Anna Pihl" (2006) and "Forbrydelsen" (2007).

Since 28 May 2018, he has been chairman of the Danish Actors' Association and from 2022 spokesperson for the rights organization Create Denmark, which negotiates rights on behalf of a number of Danish associations in the creative industry.

The Danes own two TV stations - and our two public service stations are both busy strengthening the foundations for users to follow on the digital platforms, in the growing competition with the global streaming services.

What are the means to maintain Danes' interest in public service television in the age of streaming? And how does public service work best on digital platforms?

has announced a major change in strategy with a major focus on fully embracing the digital streaming consumer. What is more precisely behind the digital conversion at DR?

TV 2
is successful with the growing focus on TV 2 Play as the focal point for the station's future. What does TV 2's next step look like to preserve TV 2 in Danes' consciousness in a new digital reality?

On this post, we get the opportunity to hear both of our TV stations' bids for their future and we get the opportunity to ask about the concrete measures for future activities.

Maria Rørbye Rønn has been director general of DR since 2011, and has been associated with DR since 1995 as, among other things, head of law and director of DR Law, Politics and Strategy. Maria Rørbye Rønn is a law graduate and before DR, among others spent two years as a clerk in the Ministry of Culture.

In Denmark, we have adopted a cultural contribution of 6%, a rate to be paid by streaming services operating in Denmark. The scheme awaits implementation after a new government is formed.

While some consider this an unfortunate tax on streaming, others consider it a brilliant new way to fund Danish fiction.

In this session, we will take a closer look at the cultural contribution and whether there may be a need for a reassessment of the model behind the scheme.

Excerpts from a report prepared by the trade association Animation Denmark are presented, and we get, among other things, an overview of similar schemes in other European countries, and we look at impact calculations for the scheme in Denmark.

Next, we have a discussion with two prominent industry players about possible modifications to the cultural contribution in its current form.

It is not a discussion for or against the cultural contribution, but a discussion about how industry actors see a scheme implemented optimally in Denmark, so that it can function as a sound foundation for cooperation between Danish producers and the global streaming services.

Copenhagen Bombay was founded in 2006 with the main focus on developing original stories for children and young people and producing feature films, TV series, animated films, books, concepts etc. on all available platforms.

Peter Bose

Peter Bose has worked in the film industry since 1996.

Peter specializes in film financing and business management and has structured the financing and production of a large number of Scandinavian productions.

Peter worked in the finance industry before joining Victoria Film as head of finance in 1996. In 1998, Peter became Vice President at Per Holst Film (a division of Nordisk Film).

In 2000, Peter co-founded the production company FilmPeople and from 2003 to 2005 he held the position of Executive Producer at Yellow Bird Films.

Peter co-founded Miso Film with business partner Jonas Allen in 2004.

Miso Film and Peter Bose have been behind films such as "The Candidate", "The Shadow in My Eye" by Ole Bornedal and TV series such as "The Investigation", "The Killer", "The Interrogation" and the Netflix series "The Rain".

It is estimated that global streaming services have already bought productions worth over half a billion kroner in Denmark and most of them have a growing desire to invest.

How does a major global streaming service itself see the importance of local content as a growth engine for more local subscribers? And how can Danish content be used in their global market?

As head of content acquisition for Prime Video Nordics, Norwegian Andreas Hjertø from Prime Video's office in Stockholm is responsible for identifying and acquiring the best local content for the Nordic audience in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland.

With extensive experience in managing, producing, commissioning and developing content on all platforms, Hjertø was previously director of the production company Limelight, later Rakett.

Most recently, Hjertø was program director for five years at Viaplay Group (formerly NENT Group).
